IOANNINA ISLAND
This small island in Lake Pamvotis was the last refuge of Ali Pasha of Ioannina in 1822. Museum, beautiful houses and monasteries.
On Lake Pamvotis, this 0.2-km2 island (Νησί Ιωαννίνων/Nisi Ioanninon) is home to around 180 inhabitants. It is home to former residences of the Byzantine aristocracy and three monasteries. Near the quay, the 15th-century Agios Pantelimonas monastery has become a museum: it was here that Ali Pasha of Ioannina was killed by Ottoman soldiers on January 24, 1822. The holes in the floor of his last refuge are presented as the result of gunfire. The Filanthropinon monastery boasts beautiful 16th-century frescoes.
