Opening at the end of 2024, this metro (Μετρό Θεσσαλονίκης/Metro Thessalonikis) currently comprises just one 9.6 km line with 13 stations between the railway station and the Nea Elvetia ("New Switzerland") district to the southeast. This is due to be extended to the south with a further five stations by 2025. In the city center, the main stations are Aghia Sofia and Venizelou. The network will eventually comprise 2 lines and serve the airport. It is owned by the national company Elleniko Metro, which also operates the Athens metro and streetcar.
