PROFITIS ILIAS CHURCH OF THESSALONICA
Byzantine church built around 1360, with superb brickwork and some remarkable original frescoes. Unesco.
This church built around 1360 (Ιερός Ναός Προφήτη Ηλία/Ieros Naos Profiti Ilia) is one of 15 monuments in Thessaloniki listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Close to Ano Poli, it boasts fine brickwork, a leaning dome and a cross-shaped plan similar to that of the Athos churches. Although converted into a mosque (c. 1430-1912), it retains some remarkable original frescoes, notably that of the Massacre of the Innocents.
