METAMORFOSIS TOU SOTIROS CHURCH OF THESSALONIKI
Small church built around 1345. Original frescoes on the dome (leaning) rediscovered after an earthquake in 1978. Unesco.
Dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, this small church built around 1345 (Ιερός Ναός Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος Χριστού/Ieros Metamorfoseos tou Sotiros Christou) is one of 15 monuments in Thessaloniki listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Situated several meters below the level of Egnatia Street, it has been damaged several times, most recently by an earthquake in 1978. However, the original frescoes on the (tilted) dome have now reappeared.
