ONARION THE GREEK CONCEPT STORE
Former 1903 mosque belonging to the Dönme community, Jews who converted to Islam and retained Judaic rites.
This 1903 mosque (Γενί Τζαμί/Yeni Tzami) goes by the rather common name of "new mosque" in Turkish (Yeni Camii). It belonged to the Dönme, Jews who converted to Islam and retained Judaic rites. Blending Moorish and Art Nouveau styles, the building lost its minaret when it was closed to worship in 1922. It housed the Archaeological Museum (1925-1962) and is occasionally used for exhibitions. Note the decorative Stars of David and the ancient steles in the courtyard.
