Dominating the city, the "Seven Towers" fort (Επταπύργιο/Eptagorio, Yedi Kule) is part of Thessaloniki's Unesco World Heritage walls. Built from the 9th century onwards, it was reinforced by the Ottomans after the city was taken in 1430, as evidenced by the impressive main gate, made of ancient fillings and adorned with an inscription by Sultan Murad II. The fort served as a prison until 1989. You can climb a rampart and visit the visiting rooms, cells, a guard station and a small exhibition.
