MACEDONIAN MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART (MOMUS)
Fine collection on site (Fassianos, Magritte, Warhol...) and annex in the suburbs with major works by the Russian avant-garde.
This museum (Μακεδονικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης/Makedoniko Mousio Synchronis Technis) boasts works by several great Greek artists such as sculptor Takis (1925-2019) and painters Alexis Akrithakis (1934-1994) and Alekos Fassianos (1935-2022), but also creations by renowned foreign artists: René Magritte, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, Dennis Oppenheim... Young Greek and European artists are also represented in the collection or in temporary exhibitions. Established in 1994 as the first museum of contemporary art in Greece, MOMus is housed within the 18-hectare complex of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF-HelExpo), on the site of part of what was Europe's largest Jewish cemetery (some 500,000 graves) until its complete destruction by the Nazis and the municipality in 1942. MOMus also runs three other museums in the conurbation. The Experimental Arts Centre and the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, both of which offer only temporary exhibitions, are located on Pier 1 of the port. And, above all, 4.5 km to the north-west, in Stavroupoli, a former Lazarist monastery (1886) houses the Museum of Modern Art with the impressive Costakis collection devoted to the Russian avant-garde, including major works by Kandinsky, Mayakovsky, Malevich and Klioune. Bus: line no. 34 from the top of Rue Aristotelous.
