ZEUS AMMON SANCTUARY
A small seaside archaeological site featuring the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian god Zeus Ammon.
On the edge of Kallithea's main beach, this small archaeological site (Ιερό Άμμωνος Διός/Iero Ammonos Dios) houses the remains of a sanctuary and thermal bath of the ancient city of Aphytis. Here, Dionysus (associated with the cult of the Nymphs), the god of medicine Asclepius and the Greco-Egyptian god Zeus Ammon were honored together. The latter's temple, dating from the 4th century BC, was framed by two rows of statues. The complex was abandoned in the5th century and destroyed by Russian monks from the Agios Pantelimonos monastery on Athos.
