XENOFONTOS MONASTERY
Founded around 998, it houses the largest church in Athos (1839) and another dating from the or century. Renowned icon workshop.
Situated on the seafront, this monastery (Ιερά Μονή Ξενοφώντος/Iera Moni Xenofontos) was founded around 998 on the site, it is said, of a monastery erected in the 6th century by the monk Saint Xenofon. Most of the buildings date from the 18th-19th centuries, in particular the largest catholicon on Athos (1839). But the ancient catholicon (10th or 11th century) houses 16th-century frescoes and a 9th-century icon of St. George donated by Emperor Alexis Comnenus. The fifty or so monks are renowned for their icon workshop.
