Reconstruction of a Neolithic lakeside village famous for its tablet bearing perhaps the world's oldest alphabet.
This open-air museum (Ανοιχτό Μουσείο Δισπηλιού/Anichto Mousio Dispiliou) is a reconstruction of a Neolithic lake village, traces of which were unearthed in 1932 right next door. The site is famous for its enigmatic "Dispilio tablet" discovered in 1993: a piece of wood preserved in water dating from around 5260 B.C. It bears 45 signs, some of which evoke the Greek letters Ε, Ω, Ψ and Δ. Researchers believe it calls into question the hypothesis of the birth of writing in Mesopotamia around 4000 BC.
