KASTORIA BYZANTINE MUSEUM

This museum (Βυζαντινού Μουσείου Καστοριάς/Vyzantinou Mousio Kastorias) houses an impressive collection of 700 icons from the ^12th to ^17th centuries from churches in and around the city. Such richness is thought to be due to the emergence of painting workshops here as early as the ^11th century, before the emergence of the prestigious "Kastoria school of art" that spread throughout the southern Balkans in the ^15th and ^16th centuries, in particular with the great Albanian painter Onufri.
