BASILICA AGIOS ACHILLIOS
Ruins of a large late Bulgarian basilica. This is the most emblematic site on the island of Agios Achillios.
This ruined basilica (Βασιλική Αγίου Αχιλλείου/Vasiliki Agiou Achilliou) was founded around 983-986 by the Bulgarian Emperor Samuel, who had the seat of the Bulgarian Church and the relics of his patron Saint Achilles of Larissa transferred here. This vast three-aisled edifice was remodeled after the Byzantine Reconquest of 1018 and abandoned in the 15th century. Some frescoes have been preserved and are on display at the Florina Archaeological Museum.
