Former Greek Orthodox cathedral converted into a mosque: minaret and beautiful frescoes recently rediscovered.

This former Greek Orthodox cathedral (Παλαιά Μητρόπολη) is a triple-naved Byzantine basilica built around 1070 that was converted into a mosque from 1433 to 1912. Restored and reopened to worship since 2016, it retains a minaret. During the restoration work, superb frescoes from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries were uncovered: Baptism of Christ, Visitation of the Virgin... Since 1969, the seat of the metropolis (archbishopric) of Véria and Naoussa has been the new Agii Anargyri church, 400 m south of the Archaeological Museum.
