BARBOUTA JEWISH QUARTER
Former quarter of Véria's now-defunct Jewish community: beautiful fortified houses and synagogue.
This small Ottoman-period neighborhood (Εβραϊκή Συνοικία Μπαρμπούτας/Evraïki Synoikia Barboutas) retains some 50 fine fortified houses, some with colorful corbels, and a synagogue dating from 1850. It was populated by Romaniotes (Hellenized Jews) from the 1st century onwards. The community numbered 700 inhabitants before the Second World War: 460 were murdered by the Nazis, the survivors settling in France and Israel.
