VAROSI DISTRICT
Old Christian quarter from the Ottoman period. Beautiful houses, Ecclesiastical Museum and churches, two of which date from the century.
This pretty neighborhood (Βαρόσι) takes its name from the Turkish varoş meaning "suburb". After Edessa was taken by the Ottomans in 1389, this was the first Christian quarter to be built outside the walls. Despite the fire set by the Nazis in 1944, it retains beautiful traditional Macedonian corbelled houses and several churches, including two 14th-century ones on Megalou Alexandrou Street, on either side of the Ecclesiastical Museum (icons). The Church of the Kimisis (Dormition) in particular features frescoes from the 14th and 17th centuries.
