LONGOS ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
Remains of the lower town of Edessa in Roman times: fortifications, central street lined with columns and ruins of dwellings.
This site (Αρχαιολογικός Χώρος Λόγγου/Archaiologikos Choros Longou) houses remains from the Roman period of Edessa's lower town. Enter through the south gate, framed by two sections of ramparts, and follow the central street lined with Hellenistic columns for 80 m, overlooking the ruins of dwellings. Damaged by the Goths in the 3rd century, the district was redeveloped, then abandoned in the 7th century in favor of the upper town fortified by the Byzantines.
