AGIOS NIKOLAOS CHURCH IN KAVALA
Ottoman mosque converted into a church. Exterior: recent mosaic of St. Paul's "vision" on his way to Philippi.
This cubic domed church (Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Νικολάου/Ieros Naos Agiou Nikolaou) is the former İbrahim-Paşa mosque dating from 1530, which was converted into a Christian place of worship after the forced departure of Muslims (Turks, Albanians...) in 1923. The minaret was demolished and replaced by a bell tower. Outside, a 35m2 mosaic (2004) illustrates the Apostle Paul's "vision", around 49 A.D., of his journey to Philippi via the port of Neapolis/Kavala.
