MEHEMET ALI MUSEUM
Museum in the superb birthplace of Mehemet Ali Pasha de Kavala (1769-1849), founder of modern Egypt. Garden, exhibition.
This museum (Μουσείο Μωχάμετ Άλη/Mousio Mohamet Ali) is housed in an elegant 18th-century Ottoman house where Kavala's most famous figure, Mehemet Ali (1769-1849), was born and lived until he was 30. Of Turkish-Albanian origin, this Ottoman officer founded Egypt's last royal dynasty (1805-1953). He is considered the "father" of modern Egypt. Owned by the Egyptian state, the 330m2 house has been magnificently restored, with a garden and an exhibition on Mehemet Ali and local Muslim traditions.
