KAVALA TOBACCO MUSEUM
Housed in a former warehouse, this museum traces the saga of tobacco in Kavala. The industry employed up to 12,500 people here in 1925.
This museum (Μουσείο Καπνού Καβάλας/Mousio Kapnou Kavalas) traces the rich history of tobacco production in Kavala, introduced by the Ottomans in the 18th century. It is housed in the warehouse (1810) of a former state factory closed in 1980. In seven rooms, you'll find period objects used in the various stages of production: leaf harvesting, drying, cutting, etc. The exhibition also looks at the social aspects: the sector employed up to 12,500 people in 1925, and Kavala was a hotbed of trade unionism.
