Winegrowers in the Drama region are concentrated around the village of Adriani. Good organic wines at Domaine Costa Lazaridis.
Around Drama, winegrowers produce wines that are often very good, but little known. For, despite a PGI, they suffer from too wide a variety of grape varieties (some twenty!), which detracts from the identity of the terroir. Most are concentrated around the village of Adriani (population 850). We recommend tasting at two organic producers: the (large) Domaine Costa Lazaridis, in Adriani, and the (small) Microwinery Eftichia, in Kyrgia. Near Adriani, Oenogenesis is worth a visit for its enormous cellar, which resembles an Athonite monastery.
