GREENHOUSE ACROPOLIS
Hill overlooking Serres with remains of Byzantine ramparts and medieval Serbian tower. Panoramic café-restaurant.
This hill (Ακρόπολη Σερρών/Akropoli Serron) overlooks Serres at an altitude of 150m. It houses the remains of a fortress built by the Byzantines from the 10th century onwards and several times subsequently remodeled. The ancient ramparts are dominated by the "Orestes Tower" (20 m high), built around 1350, when Serres was part of Stefan Dušan's Serbian Empire. Also known as Koula (from the Turkish kule, "tower"), the acropolis offers fine views over the town. There's a small parking lot (often full at weekends) and a panoramic bar-restaurant.
