It was from here that Alexander the Great set out with his fleet in 334 BC to conquer the Persian Empire. Beach right next door.
At the mouth of the Strymon, this small, well-protected natural harbor (Λιμάνι Αμφίπολης/Limani Amfipolis) was the departure point for Alexander the Great's fleet to the Persian Empire in May 334 B.C. It was also from here that Mark Antony and Cleopatra's Roman and Egyptian ships set sail before winning the naval battle of Actium (September 2, 31 B.C.). To the south, Limani beach is home to German bunkers from the Second World War. And to the east, another arm of the Strymon shelters the remains of a 14th-century fort in the Byzantine port of Chrysopolis.
