LION D'AMPHIPOLIS
Large statue of a lion on a pedestal (total height 15.84 m) erected on the banks of the Strymon in the late century BC.
This monumental marble statue (Λέων Αμφιπόλεως/Leon Amfipoleos) stands in the last meander of the Strymon, near the coastal village of Nea Kerdylia. Erected at the end of the 4th century BC, it depicts a 5.3m-high seated lion facing the ancient city of Amphipolis, set on a pedestal with a total height of 15.84m. Rediscovered in 1912, the work is often attributed to Dinocrates of Rhodes, the architect of Alexander the Great. But the greatest mystery surrounds this statue, which has become the symbol of Eastern Macedonia.
