PONT ANTIQUE EN BOIS D'AMPHIPOLIS
Exceptional site along the Strymon: 101 sediment-covered wooden piles of a bridge dating from the late century BC.
This exceptional site (Αρχαία Ξύλινη Γέφυρα Αμφίπολης/Archaia Xylini Gefyra Amfipolis) preserves the oldest remains of a wooden bridge in Europe, a late5th century BC structure that spanned the Strymon River. On the left bank, 101 wooden piles have been placed under cover and covered with sediment, allowing them to be preserved. The bridge itself (275 m long) provided access to Amphipolis and was a strategic link between Macedonia and Thrace.
