ANCIENT AMPHIPOLIS SITE
History. The huge Amphipolis site was one of the most important cities in Macedonia in ancient times. Founded in 436 by Hagnon as an Athenian colony, it was located at a strategic location, surrounded by the rich inland and the sea. Amphipolis has been the scene of many events that have marked Greece: starting point of the expedition of Alexander, place of exile of his wife Roxane, anchor of the fleet of Marc Antoine before the famous battle of Actium…
Above all, it owes its prosperity to the via Egnatia who crossed her, and who made it an important shopping center of Antiquity. Also important to Christianity, she became the seat of the bishop until 692. Therefore, today one of its main points of interest is the acropolis with its five basilica, which are usually visited after the museum. The city apparently was destroyed in the eighteenth century.
Visit. We will begin by the museum where the pieces exposed on the site are displayed in chronological order, before going to the acropolis and then descending to the lion and the rampart.
The lion is visible from the road without barriers. Not obvious to find, it is, with the rampart, an interesting detour that will ask you only 20 minutes. And it's mostly a beautiful photo opportunity, so much it looks infinitely small next to this gigantic statue (5.20 m, still…).
