THEOPETRA CAVE
Cave with traces of human occupation dating back 130,000 years. Closed to the public, but a rich little archaeological museum nearby.
The "God's Stone" cave (Σπήλαιο Θεόπετρας/Spilaio Theopetra) lies beneath a large limestone boulder 380 m above sea level. It has yielded traces of occupation dating back 130,000 years by Neanderthal man and Homo sapiens. Although it has been closed to the public since 2016 due to landslides, the nearby village of Theopetra (population approx. 500) houses a rich little archaeological museum dedicated to the discoveries made here: human remains, footprints, flints, pottery, figurines, a gold pendant..
