TRIKALA CASTLE
Byzantine castle remodelled by the Ottomans on the ancient acropolis. Nearby: old quarter with small archaeological site.
This castle (Κάστρο Τρικάλων/Kastro Trikalon) was erected by the Byzantines in the 6th century on the site of the Trikka acropolis. Repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt under the Ottomans, it retains thick walls and four defensive towers. On the same hill are a park, the clock tower (1936, 33 m high) and a café. Access is via the Manavika district, home to more recent churches, 18th- and 19th-century houses and a small archaeological site (temple of Asclepius, Roman baths, etc.).
