PORTARIA PANAGIA CHURCH
Small but most precious church in the village of Portaria. iconostasis and frescoes painted in 1581.
This 16th-century Greek Orthodox church (Ιερός Ναός Παναγίας Πορταρέας/Ieros Naos Panagias Portareas) is quite modest in size (10 x 9 m) compared to its neighbor Agios Nikolaos (1856). But it belonged to a monastery founded in 1273, which gave its name to the village. It retains an 18th-century iconostasis and frescoes from 1581, notably the representation of the Dormition of the Mother of God and portraits of the archangels Michael and Gabriel.
