THEOPHILOS MUSEUM

This museum (Μουσείο Θεοφίλου/Mousio Theophilou) is located in Anakasia, below the Pelion villages of Makrinitsa and Protaria. This is the Kontos house (early ^19th century), the interior of which was painted in 1912 by the great naive artist Theophilos Hadjimichaïl (c. 1870-1934): battle scenes from the War of Independence, depictions of the gods Ares, Aphrodite, Hermes and Athena, a portrait of the owner Ioannis Kontos, flowers, wild animals and more. Other works can be seen in Protaria, or on Lesbos, the painter's native island.
