GEORGIOS-SCHWARTZ MANSION
Superb corbelled house. Wood panelling, porcelain fireplaces, murals and Ottoman lounge.
This large, beautiful 18th-century building (Αρχοντικό Γεωργίου Σβάρτς/Archontiko Georgiou-Svarts) belonged to Georgios Mavros (1738-1824), known as Schwartz ("black" in German, as mavros in Greek), who was the last president of the powerful Ambelakia weaving cooperative, renowned for its madder-based red dyes, but dissolved in 1811 under pressure from English competitors. The first and second floors feature bedrooms with superb wood panelling, porcelain fireplaces, wall frescoes and a corbelled Ottoman-style salon.
