MONT OSSA
1,878 m high mountain between Olympus and Pelion, with the pleasant village of Spilia 31 km northeast of Larissa.
This massif (Όσσα) culminates at 1,978 m altitude with a pretty pyramidal peak and covers an area of 169 km2 between Olympus and Pelion. The western and northern slopes are covered with forests. Below the summit, the village of Spilia (population 250) is the starting point for several hiking trails. There's a hotel, a museum and several tavernas. In mythology, the Aloades, sons of Poseidon, attempted to stack Mount Pelion and Mount Ossa to surpass Olympus. Hence the French expression "entasser Pélion sur Ossa" ("stacking Pelion on Ossa"), referring to a crazy project.
