Ancient city founded around 656 B.C. Remains of a fortification, bridge, towers and roadway 74 m long and 6 m wide can be seen. In Byzantine times, the town was renamed Polystylon and confined to a small area around the port. Various Byzantine churches, tombs and cemeteries from the Archaic to the post-Byzantine periods can be seen. During the Ottoman period, the present-day village of Avdira came into being.
