HISTORICAL MUSEUM OF ALEXANDROUPOLI
Historical museum located downtown that organizes temporary exhibitions and various events.
It's an interesting space spread over four levels. The first floor is used for temporary exhibitions organized by the museum on a regular basis. If you're just passing through, keep an eye out for the program, as the museum often hosts interesting one-day conferences, book presentations with their authors, educational programs and, of course, cultural events. But for the classic visit, it all really starts on the second floor, devoted to a permanent exhibition on the history of the city, with distinct and didactic sections on the archaeological sites around the city, the founding of the city and its relationship with the railroad and the port, its architecture and its economic, cultural and social evolutions. The exhibition is articulated through a modern museological approach, using photographic compositions, interactive material and projections, as well as collections of documents and relics from a remarkable archive collection drawn from donations and private and public entities. On the second floor, the mezzanine houses the collection of costumes of the Saracatsan Greek minority: these outfits reveal the evolution of the particular life of women in the region. The museum library is also open to visitors. And 200 m away, don't miss the town's most famous monument: the Alexandroupoli lighthouse (18 m high), built by the French in 1880.
