CITY SYNAGOGUE
Synagogue and one of the most important Jewish cemeteries in Chalkida.
Built in the 14th century, after the Venetians allowed the Jewish community to leave the ghetto walls, it was burnt down and rebuilt in 1847. It bears witness to the importance and antiquity of Chalcis' Jewish community, which dates back over 2,500 years. The Jewish cemetery of Chalcis is also one of the most important Jewish cemeteries in Greece, containing tombs dating back to the Ottoman period (15th century). The shape of the tombs here, with domes, is unique. 600 tombs have been restored since the 1990s.
