ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Archaeological museum that houses three rooms with many funerary monuments.
This small museum is worth a visit - whether you are staying in Chalcis or just passing through - as it does indeed house some interesting pieces spread out between the courtyard and the cramped building. The main challenge, as elsewhere in the city, will be just to park. The building now consists of a large courtyard and three rooms, where the exhibits are located. In the courtyard at the entrance, you will find numerous funerary monuments as well as a marble bench from a theater whose location is unknown to this day. At the back of the courtyard, opposite the entrance to the building, are Roman statues as well as four Doric capitals that are believed to have come from the temple of Zeus at Chalkis.
Visit. The museum presents very beautiful works in an educational way and in a chronological order. Showcases 5 and 6 present objects found in tombs dating from the Mycenaean period, between 1500 and 1050 BC. In showcase 9, Cycladic marble figurines of unusual shapes. The room on the left contains beautiful statues of Kouroi from the 6th century BC. The showcase n° 11 exposes superb archaic and classical potteries. In the middle room, in addition to the large acephalous statue of Dionysus or Apollo, you should not miss, on the right, the statue of Antinous, Hadrian's favorite, dressed, like Dionysus, in a panther skin, with a crown of ivy and vine leaves. In the courtyard of the museum you will also see funerary monuments and Roman sculptures.
