CITY SYNAGOGUE
Synagogue and one of the most important Jewish cemeteries in Chalkida.
Built in the 14th century, after the Venetians allowed the Jewish community to leave the ghetto walls, it was burnt down and then rebuilt in 1847. It bears witness to the importance and antiquity of the Jewish community of Chalcis, more than 2,500 years old. The Jewish cemetery of Chalkida is also one of the most important Jewish cemeteries in Greece, as it contains tombs dating from the Ottoman period (15th century). The shape of the tombs found here, with domes, is unique. 600 tombs have been restored since the 1990s.
