ST GEORGE'S MONASTERY
Monastery inhabited by 300 monks with a view of the gulf and the sea.
Even if the road is a bit difficult at the end, the view from the monastery courtyard over the northern Gulf of Evia and the sea of the Ilia region is magnificent and really worth the detour. Founded in the 13th century, this monastery dedicated to Saint George (Moni Agiou Georgiou Ilion) is 450 metres high. It was inhabited by 300 monks in the early days who lived in huts around the central church. It also served as a place of refuge and protection for many Christians during the Ottoman occupation
