PALEOHORA
Byzantine city with churches with interesting frescoes and the monastery of Saint-Nectaire
This Byzantine city was built in 896 to escape Saracen attacks. It became the island's capital in the 9th century and was abandoned by its inhabitants at the beginning of the last century. Built on a hill, this ghost town has owned 565 churches. There are only 28 of them left at the moment, with very interesting frescoes. Visiting the churches is a really pleasant walk. On site, you will also visit the monastery of Saint-Nectaire, patron saint of the island, who spent the last years of his life there.
