Battle of the Persians and Athenians at Salamis
This is where the battle of Salamis took place in 480 BC. The Persians decided to take revenge for a bitter defeat they had suffered ten years earlier and sent a large fleet of 500 heavily armed ships and more than 300,000 soldiers ready to land east of Piraeus. The tactic remained: the Greeks, simulating a retreat to Salamis, invited the Persians to launch half of their fleet in pursuit, in the strait. The next day, under the orders of Themistocles, the Athenians began to encircle the opposing fleet.
