FANEROMENI MONASTERY
Monastery preserving interesting frescoes of the eighteenth century
6 km from the capital, this monastery has preserved interesting frescoes from the 18th century. It was founded by Lambros Kanellos (future Saint Lawrence), a fervent Christian of Megara, who had a vision of the Virgin Mary. He would have gone to the indicated place where he would have found a miraculous icon, the site of the future monastery. During the revolution of 1821, it became a refuge for combatants and civilians. It welcomed Greek heroes such as Makriyanis, Tsavellas, Ypsilantis. Nowadays, only a few nuns live there.
