VRIOKASTRO
Site in Merichas with remains of wall, temples and cisterns to collect water.
This is the center of the ancient capital of Kythnos: a large city, Vriokastro (βρυοκαστρο), probably founded at the end of the5th century BC on the site of a much older city, and stretching as far as the islet of Aghios Loukas. Today, the remains of an impressive wall, water cisterns and temples perhaps dedicated to Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, are the main attractions. Recent excavations have uncovered further temples. However, archaeological work continues to determine their use.
