Most frequented pebble beaches of the island with archaeological excavations.
Sandy or pebble beaches invite you to dive into the Aegean Sea. You can get to all these beaches by bus or on foot (for the more motivated).
In the southwest , Aliki, Bonatsa and Kalamitsi are the most popular beaches of the island. These long stretches of fine sand (Bonatsa), sometimes dotted with pebbles (Aliki and Kalamitsi), are planted with tamarisk trees which provide welcome shade. The waters are clear and of a magnificent blue. Continuing on the dirt road to the west, you will find Dekas, Ellinika and Mavrospilia, protected from the meltemi. They face the islet of Aghios Andreas, with the remains of an ancient sunken city. In Ellinika, archaeological excavations have uncovered an ancient necropolis embedded in the rock. From these three beaches, you will witness a memorable sunset.
To the north-east , the small bay of Rema looks like something out of a postcard with the multi-coloured boat houses that the local fishermen have dug into the white rock. A rock that looks like an elephant guards the entrance to the bay. Further on, the Karas cove offers incomparable blue waters: you can swim there from pure white rocks (be careful: no shade!). Beyond, the large pebble beach of Klima is exposed to the wind but has large tamarisk trees. To the north, Prassa is a large white sandy beach which is quite exceptional when it is not invaded by campers in August... Hot springs are located at the entrance of the beach.
