Typical houses of Milos with bright colors carved in the rock.
These are typical, brightly colored cottages. Carved into the rock, these fishermen's huts (Σύρματα) have a dual function: at sea level, the multicolored doors give access to a boat garage, while the upper floor is used as a summer residence. The word comes from the Greek syro, meaning "to draw". These constructions appeared in the mid-19th century, when the risks of invasion and pillage from pirate raids had disappeared: bright colors were finally welcome on the coasts!
