KASTRO
The oldest houses of the original medieval plan of the kastro.
This kastro is a unique testimony of medieval town planning in the time of the Venetians. Arriving in the early 1200s, as a direct consequence of the Fourth Crusade, the Venetian occupants built a first fortified town. Two centuries later, a fire destroyed the original town, which was then rebuilt. The oldest houses retain the original medieval plan but date from the 15th century. The kastro forms a kind of isosceles triangle: the two equal sides lead to the top of the Panaghia Pantanassa and the third side is closed by the Pounta square.
