CITY HOTEL
City Hall in a remarkable setting on the central square of Ermoupolis.
It is impossible to miss this very original building with a three-storey facade overlooking Place Miaouli. The city hall of the capital was built in 1876 under the control of Ernst Ziller at an estimated cost of about 300,000 drachmas, a colossal amount for the time! But what a job! Note the beauty of some details, such as these two wings with five vertical window handles on the left and right. Overall, the building owes its inspiration to three different architectural trends. The Tuscan style is present on the 1st floor, illustrated by the imposing staircase 15 metres wide, the classical Greek style is installed on the 2nd floor and finally the Corinthian style is present, almost by definition, in its columns.
The town hall also features a marble pediment dedicated to former Mayor Bafiadakis. Otherwise, the other remarkable elements of the town hall remain the ladder suspended at the entrance, the bust of Bafiadakis, the council chamber and the portraits of the former mayors. The town hall now houses the courts, the land registry, the archaeological museum and several public bodies.
Located in the central square of Ermoupolis, you will also see the bust of Andreas Miaoulis, the heroic admiral of the war of independence, and the imposing building of the town hall. On weekends, you can attend concerts and other cultural events. Planted with tall palm trees, the square is lined with many cafés where it is pleasant to laze, watching people pass by.Did you know?
