The Chemin des Muletiers is the preferred route for hikers to the summit of the Puy de Dôme. Even so, you'll have to be willing to climb the 15 numbered switchbacks and the 300-meter ascent. The climb offers magnificent panoramic views of the Chaîne des Puys and the Massif du Sancy. Parking is available at the Col de Ceyssat. It's best to get there early in high season, as it's very busy at this time of year. You can also park close to the Panoramique des Dômes station for a longer trip.
