The island is said to have 365 churches and chapels. The best known, after Agia Irini at the port, is Panagia Gremiotissa (Παναγία η Γκρεμνιώτισσα) dedicated to the island's patron saint. Its name could be translated as "Virgin Mary of the steep cliff", no doubt due to its location. Built in 1797 on the highest point of Chora, it is recognizable by its blue dome and prized for its unobstructed view of the white houses, the harbour and the blue Aegean Sea. Three other churches stand on the same hill.
