The archaeological museum is housed in the neoclassical megaron in the center of town, which also includes the town hall. The four halls are organized thematically and chronologically.
Hall 1 houses a photographic exhibition on the natural history and archaeological research history of Ios. Most of the objects on display come from the perfectly preserved ancient Cycladic settlement of Skarkos. These include pottery and small clay objects, stone vessels and tools, figurines, bone and bronze objects and organic materials (cereals, animal bones, shells).
Room 2 presents developments during the Middle and Late Bronze Ages, with exhibits mainly from these phases of the Skarkos settlement. The prehistoric exhibition in these two rooms highlights the economic and social structure of the Cycladic civilization of the Aegean during the 3rd millennium BC, and the reasons for its integration into the palatial civilizations of Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece.
Rooms 3 and 4 present the history of Ios from Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Early Christian times. The exhibits include an interesting collection of inscriptions, sculptures - including two exceptional funerary stelae - and pottery dating from the 7th century A.D. These objects provide an insight into the political, economic and social evolution of Ios over this long period.
