SACRED ROAD
Also called Avenue des Processions, this beautiful paved road allowed pilgrims to reach the sanctuary of Apollo from the Agora des Compétaliastes. It is 13 m wide and 91 m long.
Porticoes . The Sacred Way is bordered by the remains of colonnades, architraves and statue bases that belonged to two porticoes (stoai)
: on the left, the portico of Philip V, erected by the Macedonian king Philip V around 210 BC; on the right, the portico of Pergamos, erected at the same period by the Greek city of Pergamos (Asia Minor). Typical of the architecture of Greek sanctuaries, these two porticoes are designed according to the same model: a long covered building closed at the back by a solid wall and open at the front by a colonnade.Agora des Déliens and Saint-Cyriaque basilica. On the other side of the Pergamon portico, to the east, lies the small Agora des Déliens, a merchant square where the offices of the port administration were located. The agora itself is bordered by the remains of a small5th century basilica, the only palaeochristian church visible today in Delos.
Propylées
. The Sacred Way ends in the north with the propylées ("avant-porte") that mark the entrance to the sanctuary of Apollo. On the right, before the propylaeus, note the copy of the marble statue of Hermes Propylaios ( devant the porte ). This representation of the god, here bearded, dates from 341 B.C. It was commissioned by the Amphictyony of Delos, the league in charge of the administration of the sanctuary.Did you know? This review was written by our professional authors.
