A 10.5 km trail (approx. 3h15 walk) with superb views of Santorini Bay and numerous churches along the way.
This trail (Μονοπάτι Φηρά-Οία) skirts the caldera with grandiose views over the bay. The route isn't always well signposted, but it's easy to spot with several restaurants and cafés on the first part. The second part is unshaded. Bring water, a hat and good shoes. At Thira, starting from the top station of the cable car, you pass the Catholic churches of Agios Stylianos and the "Three Bells" (Tris Kampanes), both built in 1757. After 650 m, you reach Firostefani. The path follows the village's main pedestrian street, with the Orthodox church of Agios Gerasimos (founded in 1807, but of recent construction), which also boasts fine views. Around 550 m further on, the female Orthodox monastery of Agios Nikolaos (founded in 1651) awaits you with its beautiful panorama. Another 650 m and you're in Imerovigli. The village boasts a number of Orthodox churches and chapels, rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake, but very photogenic. Below the church of Panagia Malteza ("of Malta"), you can make a short 300 m detour to the ruins of the Venetian citadel of Skaros: this was the island's capital from the 14th to 16th centuries. Continue north for 2.6 km: this section to the Profitis Ilias chapel (1750) is considered the most beautiful. Shortly afterwards, follow the main road for 300 m. There's another 2.5 km to the pretty Kimisi tis Theotokou chapel near Finikia, then 1.6 km to Oia.
